Illinois public libraries will have a new posting requirement beginning January 1, 2027.
On August 7, 2026, Governor JB Pritzker signed Public Act 104-0808, also known as Tammurra’s Act. The new law specifically applies to public libraries established under the Local Library Act (75 ILCS 5) and the Public Library District Act of 1991 (75 ILCS 16), as well as several other types of public facilities and institutions.
What Libraries Need to Do
Beginning January 1, 2027, covered libraries must post contact information for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in a location that is:
- Prominent
- Visible to patrons and other users
- Accessible to patrons and other users
The Act does not prescribe a specific poster, size, format, or exact wording for the required notice. However, the information posted should provide patrons with a way to access the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Individuals can reach the 988 Lifeline by calling or texting 988, and online chat services are also available.
Preparing for the January 1 Deadline
Library directors and boards should plan to have the required information posted before the law takes effect on January 1, 2027. Libraries may wish to review their public spaces now and identify an appropriate prominent and accessible location for the notice.
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free outreach and print materials that libraries may be able to use to meet the posting requirement.
